21 Days to Learn Spanish: Creating a Sustainable Learning Habit

Written by Virginia Orozco | Jun 14, 2024 5:07:01 PM

You probably have heard of the 21-day habit rule and how it’s proven to be effective. But does that apply to everything? Including learning a language? Well, let me spoil it all right away: yes, you most certainly can, but as all habits, they require more than just the will, so that’s what I’m going to show you in this article.

21 days?

Let’s first dive into what the 21-day habit rule means. According to many studies, if you want to develop a habit, you would need to have the 21 days creating it non-stop. If you succeed, then you have really high chances to maintain that habit for a long time.

On this matter, James Clear in the book “Atomic Habits” explores the power of small daily changes to create significant results in our lives, and presents the concept of “atomic habits,” which are tiny but consistent actions that form the foundation of our behaviors and allow us to achieve our goals.

In this sense, learning a new language can be a rewarding and exciting journey, however it has often been talked about how hard it is to keep the rhythm when you start advancing in the process, naturally. Whether you’re a beginner or have some basic knowledge of Spanish, establishing a consistent learning habit is crucial for making progress. In this blog post, we will guide you through a 21-day challenge to help you create a sustainable Spanish learning habit. By following these practical steps and incorporating them into your daily routine, you’ll be on your way to mastering the Spanish language in no time.

Day 1-7: Set Clear Goals and Create a Study Plan

Start by setting clear goals for your Spanish learning journey. Determine what you want to achieve and establish realistic targets. Break down your goals into smaller milestones that can be achieved within the 21-day period.

Next, create a study plan that outlines specific activities and the amount of time you’ll dedicate to learning and taking classes each day.. Having a plan will keep you focused and motivated. And remember, be realistic, it’s the only way it can be sustainable.

Day 8-14: Immerse Yourself in Spanish

To truly grasp and enjoy a language, immerse yourself in it. Surround yourself with Spanish content by listening to podcasts, watching movies or TV shows, and reading books or articles. Create a language-rich environment by changing the language settings on your devices, taking Spanish classes if possible and using Spanish learning apps. Get obsessed. Practice active listening and try to pick up new vocabulary and expressions from native speakers, and ask them to repeat a few times, they’ll be delighted, I’m sure.

Day 15-21: Practice Speaking and Writing

Speaking and writing are essential components of language learning. Seize every Spanish class to the fullest and join language groups to practice conversational skills. Engage in daily conversations in Spanish, even if it’s just for a few minutes. Additionally, keep a journal where you can write about your day, thoughts, and experiences in Spanish. This will help improve your writing skills and reinforce vocabulary and grammar.

Consistency is Key:

Consistency is the key to success when it comes to language learning. Make Spanish a part of your daily routine. Find specific times in your day where you can dedicate at least 15-30 minutes to learning. It could be during your commute, while preparing meals, or before going to bed. The key is to make it a habit and stick to it.

Track Your Progress:

Tracking your progress is an excellent way to stay motivated and see how far you’ve come. Keep a journal that allows you to track your daily study time, vocabulary learned, and milestones achieved. Celebrate your accomplishments along the way to stay motivated and encouraged.

Stay Motivated and Have Fun:

Language learning should be enjoyable. Find ways to make it fun and engaging. Explore Spanish culture through music, cooking, attending cultural events and having small talks with teachers and natives. Reward yourself for reaching milestones and keep a positive mindset throughout the process. Surround yourself with a supportive community of language learners who can share tips, resources, and encouragement.

See? Creating a sustainable Spanish learning habit in just 21 days is an achievable goal. By setting clear goals, creating a study plan, immersing yourself in the language, practicing speaking and writing, and staying consistent, you’ll be not only well on your way to fluency but also a higher competitor in the job or love (why not?) market.

Remember to track your progress, stay motivated, and most importantly, enjoy the journey. And as to everything, remember you have us, your amigos at WorldsAcross to help you achieve your goal of becoming fluent in Spanish. ¡Hagámoslo! (Let’s do it!)
