10 most common false cognates in Spanish – As technology has helped and shaped globalization, integrating people from different parts of the world, the role that the languages play is vital.

English particularly has been the lingua prima, the language people have used as a bridge to connect, however it’s been attributed to “break” other languages in the sense that it has increased the use of false cognates, thus Spanish -third spoken language globally- has been one of the most affected not only for the native speakers but the Spanish students as well.

But no worries, we’re here to help anyone who needs it, so we bring you the 10 most common false cognates in Spanish that very few notice:

  1. Eventually is an adverb that has a very different meaning from eventualmente in Spanish, as eventualmente is not something that you will happen afterwards or later but occasionally. So if you say that tendrás hijos eventualmente, you’re going to have a soccer team.
  2. If you assume something in English, you suppose it, in Spanish asumir has nothing to do with guessing or supposing but taking on or accepting a responsibility. So no supongas el significado de todas las palabras que veas en español y asume el reto de aprenderlo con nosotros. 🙂
  3. Discussing in English is way easier than discutir in Spanish which means to argue.
  4. There are verbs that can be self-sufficient in English but not in Spanish: you can embarrass yourself but no puedes embarazarte a ti misma.
  5. Actualmente actually means currently.
  6. In English you can really enjoy a good pie; in Spanish you won’t like a pie as much, but it can be quite useful for fitting with a good pair of Manolo Blanik or Nike depending on your style.
  7. If you put a lot of salt to your salad it can be so salada que no podrás comértela toda, but if you put an “en” before the word instead, you will have your original healthy meal.
  8. Puedes tener una fábrica de telas but you can’t have a fabric of tela because it would be redundant.
  9. Pan and pan: they’re both in the kitchen but only one can be eaten. Can you guess which?
  10. There are many contests that you can win by solo contestar las respuestas de manera acertada.
